If your company has opened a Twitter account, it is a great idea to have at least one person who is responsible for ensuring that it is updated regularly with useful information which will encourage people to follow you. It doesn’t reflect well on your company if you tell people you are on Twitter, but then they go to your Twitter page and see that it has not been updated for six months. It would be better not to have a Twitter account at all if it is not going to be maintained.
If you have various departments within your company, this person can be the “go-to” person for when people have a message they want to announce – and – this person can also hold departments accountable for providing a certain number of “Tweets” per week.
If no actual guidelines or timelines are set in place, it is then easy for this type of thing to fall by the way-side…when it doesn’t really take much time at all if people are active participants. Plus, it can actually be something fun for employees to do as a team and strengthen relationships between co-workers. It is also a way for departments to boast about what they are doing and keep everyone in the company informed as to the launches of marketing campaigns, staff announcements, company news, etc. It is also a great way to keep partners and clients up-to-date and informed. People love to be kept “in the loop”…it is good for business and keeps your company “top of mind”.
And remember the 80/20 rule – provide your followers with information 80% of the time and only use it as a sales-pitch platform 20% of the time. You will see that people will become loyal followers and you will gain many more followers this way. No one wants to be bombarded with information about your company only. For example, if you are a dentist, don’t just use it to promote your teeth whitening…instead, give tips on dental health, brushing, flossing, brand recommendations, etc. Then also use it to post links for breaking news etc. Think outside the box!
Web Warrior helps our clients get set up on Twitter if they are not already (if they will be committed to updating it) because it is FREE and you can reach people who you normally wouldn’t be able to reach. Social networking is huge these days – don’t be left in the dark. And if it doesn’t stick, well, nothing lost – the only way you would lose is if you never tried it out in the first place.
