Chances are if you are starting a new business venture, you will also be launching a website! Here are a few key things to remember when you are going through this process:
1. It is a very good idea to have the same company name as your website address (your URL). For example, Coca Cola is www.cocacola.com. If it was www.goodsoda.com, people are less likely to find it and remember it…especially if you do not have the advertising budget of Coca Cola to be able to bring awareness to a URL that is different.

We often enthusiastically hear “I come up first when I type my company name into Google and I don’t have SEO!” when the subject of search engine optimization comes up.
After explaining that does not mean they are getting found in the search engines, the excitement turns to dismay and confusion and the interest in the explanation of how SEO works is suddenly peaked.
If your company name is your URL (your website address – the “www.___________.com”) of course you will pop up….that is because the person online is typing in your business name – this is not the same as being found in search.

1. HTML instead of FLASH – a website can have bits of flash parts incorporated to jazz the site up,
but ensure there is adequate room for text on each page of the website
2. Don’t use frames – search engine spiders have a difficult time crawling through websites with frames
3. Black font on a white or lighter-colored background is easier to read than the reverse – you don’t want to strain people’s eyes…they will leave
4. Images are great – but not when it is a whole page of images – search engines see images as blank space…they need text to grab onto…use a mix of both

Are you more inclined to re-visit a website if you know that it is likely that fresh content will be posted to look at and read when you do? Obviously, the answer is yes! If YouTube didn’t have new videos posted regularly, the popularity of the website would wear off. YouTube has become a site where people can rely on to find a program or video clip to be posted almost instantaneously after it airs. If you miss your favorite show for example, just go there…and the bonus – you don’t even have to endure any commercials!

5. Your website is working for you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, bringing in potential clients from all over the world.
4. You will reach people who may have never heard of your company – they will find you because of the keywords they type into the search engine to reach your type of business in your location, such as “Seattle Dentist” or “San Diego Motel”.
3. Over 70% of online users rely on the Internet to search for products and services – the phone book is more of a dust-collector these days or used as a step stool to reach a high cupboard.

If you still carry around a Walkman instead of an iPod, or a cell phone that resembles a brick, chances are you are not familiar with Twitter…and you probably don’t want to be. We’ll briefly explain it to you anyways – it is a free social networking and micro-blogging service where users send and read messages known as “Tweets”. These “Tweets” are posted to the profile page of the person “Tweeting”. Everyone gets a feed of the Tweets of the people they are following. Confused yet? Check it out…you may just get hooked!
